Overview
In January 2021, the Indiana State Bar Association started a monthly program called Open Conversations: Racism & Racial Injustice. Hosted by Amundsen Davis’s Angka Hinshaw and former Indiana Supreme Court Justice Steven David, this program features direct discussions about race and culture in the legal profession. These talks are beneficial to those in the legal field looking to hear from different perspectives, and perhaps learn from others experiences, in a positive environment. Past guests have included Mike Witte, retired Executive Director of the Indiana Supreme Court’s Disciplinary Commission and the first Asian American judge in Indiana; Judge Jacqueline Nguyen of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the first Asian American woman to serve on a federal court of appeals; and Karrah Herring, Chief Equity, Inclusion & Opportunity Officer for the State of Indiana. They, and others, have all brought their unique backgrounds to talk about diversity in the workplace, racial injustice in the legal field, advancements in the profession, and celebrate accomplishments and success stories, while looking to the future.
